Update PSP to Firmware 6.61#
ARK-5 requires official firmware 6.61 (6.60 also works). If you are on a lower version, update before proceeding with the ARK-5 install.
Note that other guides may refer to PRO or LME/ME custom firmware. These are older and no longer maintained. Use ARK-5 instead.
Before you start#
There are always risks when modifying firmware. Reduce them by:
- Having at least 80% battery life
- Making sure your battery cannot fall out during the process
- Keeping the charger plugged in
Downloads#
Download the correct firmware file for your PSP model from darthsternie.net/psp-firmwares↗.
| Model | 6.60 | 6.61 |
|---|---|---|
| PSP 1000, 2000, 3000, Street | Available | Available |
| PSP Go | Available (different file) | Available (different file) |
The PSP Go uses a different update file than all other models. Make sure you download the right one.
Steps#
1. Rename the firmware file
If your downloaded file is not named EBOOT.PBP, rename it to EBOOT.PBP.
2. Transfer the firmware file
Connect your PSP via USB or remove the memory card. Copy the file to:
PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBPPSP Go users can place it on internal memory or the memory card.
3. Launch the update
Disconnect from USB mode. In the Game tab on the XMB, a new icon for the update will appear. Launch it and follow the on-screen instructions. The PSP will restart once the update is complete.
Sony's original update instructions (via Web Archive) describe the same process and show the expected folder structure if you need a reference.
Next step#
Once you are on 6.61, you can proceed with the ARK-5 install.
